Pope Francis Asks World Christians to Pray for Afghanistan Peace

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Pope Francis on Sunday called on Christians around the world to pray and observe fasting, asking God to bring peace and coexistence in Afghanistan.

“I call on all to continue to help those in need and pray that dialogue and solidarity can lead to peaceful and fraternal coexistence that offers hope for the future of this country,” he said. Reuters, August 29, 2021.

“As Christians, this situation binds us. And because of that I urge everyone to intensify prayers and observe fasting. Now is the time to do so.”

Thursday’s suicide attack killed dozens of Afghans and 13 American soldiers outside the gates of Kabul’s airport, where thousands have gathered to try to escape since the Taliban returned to power.

There are very few Christians in Afghanistan, almost all of them foreigners in embassies or aid workers.
