It was made to wait since June but it has entered with full force in Florida. Destructive winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour and storm surges accompany the “extremely dangerous” Hurricane Idalia, which broke into the Big Bend coast this Wednesday after passing through Cuba and the Mexican Yucatan.

This category three hurricane, the first of the season, “will be deadly if we don’t get out of danger and take it seriously,” warned Deanne Criswell, head of the Federal Emergency Agency. In the first images that arrive from the coast, flooding is confirmed in the beach boulevards.

“It’s something big, big, very dangerous. You have to stay away,” stressed the governor Ron Desantis. Florida authorities have ordered the evacuation of nearly two million people, residents of 28 of its 67 counties.

Located in the subtropical zone of the Atlantic, Florida is prone to receiving these powerful hurricanes. Its inhabitants still remember the violence of Hurricane Ian, which flooded its coasts last year and claimed the lives of 156 people.

In Cuba, the government met urgently to analyze the damage caused to electricity and agriculture by Idalia. More than 100,000 homes without electricity and a good number of schools affected when there are only a few days left before the start of the school year.
