While 5G support is still generally reserved for high-end smartphones, Qualcomm could soon democratize this technology by bringing it to inexpensive devices. For this, the founder of San Diego unveils his SoC Snapdragon 4-series, chips intended to equip smartphones of less than 250 euros, and providing support for the new network standard. These chips will be available to manufacturers starting next year. Among those interested, there are already brands like Oppo, Motorola, or Xiaomi, which should be the first to integrate a Snapdragon 4-series in one of its devices. “Xiaomi will become one of the first OEMs in the world to introduce a 5G smartphone powered by the 5G mobile platform of the Snapdragon 4 series. This is a new step in our long-standing collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies” Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi, said following this announcement. Aside from supporting 5G, Qualcomm has not given more details on its future SoC. We only know that it will be reserved for regions of the world with nearly 3.5 billion users.

The race for 5G

The founder – especially renowned for his High-end SoC and mid-range – should thus come to play on the borders of Mediatek, which has just announced new SoCs compatible with the new network standard at affordable prices. Regarding 5G, Qualcomm recalled that it was already available in more than 35 countries around the world, located in Asia, North and South America, Europe and Oceania. In France, the fifth generation of mobile networks is expected to debut by the end of the year in some regions.
