Qualcomm announces new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset

With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Qualcomm is introducing new names for its most powerful chipsets. Smartphones equipped with this could appear in the next few months.

Qualcomm has introduced the successor to its flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 888. With the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the model names also change: The “8” stands for the highest series, followed by the name of the respective generation.

With the exception of Samsung, many important manufacturers have already announced Android smartphones with the new chipset, some of which will be shown this year. Qualcomm names Honor, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE, among others.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has eight cores that should bring 30 percent more speed than its predecessor: a strong core based on the new ARM Cortex-X2, three Cortex-A710 cores and four Cortex-A510. Photo and video capabilities have also been expanded by allowing more data to be processed. Videos are now also supported with 8K HDR.

The new Adreno GPU is said to bring up to 30 percent more speed to games. The chipset also includes the X65 modem, which enables downloads of up to 10 Gbit / s in 5G networks and supports Wi-Fi 6 and 6E.
