Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic CANCEL controversial clash of Saudi Arabia

Nadal and Djokovic should have met in a lucrative meeting in the Middle East three days before Christmas.

The couple had been subjected to strong pressure from human rights activists to cancel the link.

Saudi Arabia has been subjected to scrutiny for their poor human rights record, especially after Jamal Khashoggi has been massacred in the country's embassy in Istanbul.

The journalist was lured into the headquarters in what was confirmed as a "premeditated murder".

Nadal and Djokovic were considering withdrawing their commitment because of the huge cry all over the world.

But Nadal's injury problems now also hindered and gave them an easy exit.

"Yes, it's not happening," said Djokovic.

"Yup [because Nadal is injured]"

Nadal spent seven weeks out due to a knee injury sustained at the US Open.

The Spaniard had to return to the Masters of Paris last week, but reported a stomach injury, forcing him to leave the ATP Finals.

Nadal also made the decision to undergo surgery on a recurrent ankle problem at the start of this week.

It means that the world n. 2 brought his season to a premature end and stopped speak beyond the controversial meeting with Djokovic.

"It was a complicated year, very good at the tennis level, when I was able to play and at the same time very bad about injuries," Nadal said in a statement at the start of this week.

"I did everything possible to reach the end of the season in good condition, both in Paris and in London, doing things well and I really wanted to play.

"Unfortunately, I had the abdominal problem in Paris last week and, moreover, I have a free body in the ankle joint that needs to be removed in the operating room today.

"It is true that we had detected it for a long time and occasionally bothered me.

"However, because the problem of abdominal muscles also prevents me from playing in London, we take advantage of the moment to remove the free body and avoid future problems.
