Rail: Heavy accident in Schleswig-Holstein: train collides with trucks


In a railway accident near Rendsburg in Schleswig-Holstein several people were injured on Wednesday morning. At the railway crossing in Alt Duvenstedt in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, a regional train collided with a truck team, as reported by the federal police in Flensburg. The tug had been left on the railway tracks, according to “Kieler Nachrichten”.

According to initial investigations of the affected people, the federal police spoke according to the DPA of eleven injured, including three seriously injured. One of them was flown by helicopter to a hospital. The police in Kiel initially assumed that about 20 were injured, but some were only examined and treated by paramedics at the scene of the accident.

The collision occurred around 4:30 in the morning. The cause of the accident and why the truck had come to a halt on the tracks were not known. The truck driver had saved himself from his cab shortly before the accident, a spokesman for the Federal Police said to DPA. The train was partly derailed and was badly damaged. On the train, according to media reports, there were 22 people.

In particular, the regional traffic between Hamburg and Flensburg was affected by the incident. The trains from Hamburg could only drive to Rendsburg, as a railway spokeswoman said to DPA. In the opposite direction the trains ended in Owschlag. Also on the east-west connection between Husum and Kiel it came to impairments. According to information from the Federal Police, a catenary was damaged, which initially had to be grounded.

Perhaps the traffic problems could drag on all day, the salvage work was difficult. More than a hundred task forces arrived in the morning.
