Do you always open and close the refrigerator door when you store your groceries? Or do you leave the door open all the time? Everyone has their own habits. But which method is the most efficient if you want to watch your energy consumption?By Ellen Den Hollander
Opening your fridge costs money. Will the door open? That will cost you between 3 and 10 percent extra energy. In other words: if you keep the door closed and limit it to 3 percent, you save about 25 kWh per year. At an electricity price of 60 cents per kWh, that equates to approximately 15 euros per year.
This saving only applies to older refrigerators. For new refrigerators, the savings are about half less, says Milieu Centraal. It’s not about mega amounts, but it pays to think about it, especially in this time of expensive energy.
But how do you organize your groceries as efficiently as possible? That is simple, according to Joyce Donat of the Consumers’ Association. Put your shopping bags as close to the fridge as possible and then go, everything in one go. So not open and close and then open and close again. “That way, the door is open for as short a time as possible. It saves energy. Even if it concerns small amounts, because a refrigerator does not consume that much.”
(Bron: Milieu Centraal)
Then it is about new refrigerators. They are quite economical. “If you have one that is 15 years old or older, then it is good to replace it. There is a difference with other appliances, but with refrigerators, the difference between older models and new ones is big,” says Donat.
Closing the refrigerator quickly is therefore important, but then it must be closed properly. “Check whether your door closes properly. You lose a lot of cold through a crack and that costs energy,” says Wieke van der Vossen, food safety expert at the Nutrition Center. To prevent a gap from forming, Milieu Centraal recommends cleaning the rubber regularly. Then it remains smooth and the door closes properly.
What temperature should you set your fridge to?
A constant temperature of 4 degrees in your refrigerator is important. “At that temperature, products spoil less quickly and bacteria hardly grow,” says Van der Vossen.
Many people do not know how cold their refrigerator should be. “Last year we asked five hundred consumers about the temperature in their refrigerator,” says Van der Vossen. “We sent a thermometer along. The average temperature that participants measured was 5.6 degrees.” There were also refrigerators where the thermometer indicated 7 degrees. “Just a little too warm for food storage.”
More saving tips for the fridge
- Don’t make your refrigerator work unnecessarily hard. Do not place it next to a hot appliance such as an oven or dishwasher. Leave at least 10 centimeters between the refrigerator and the wall to allow the heat to dissipate.
- Let leftovers cool outside the refrigerator first. That goes quickly if you put the pan or bowl in a bottom of cold water. Conversely, it is best to thaw frozen products in the refrigerator. The cold then helps to cool the refrigerator.
- Defrost the freezer section of the refrigerator or freezer regularly. With an ice layer, your freezer or freezer compartment uses more energy.
