Residents of Lithuania and Estonia visited Latvia almost half more in June than last year

Compared to April, the number of purchases with payment cards issued in Lithuania and Estonia has increased 11 times.

Lithuanians most often went to Riga, Jurmala, Liepaja, Saldus and Daugavpils, while Estonians – to Riga, Valka, Jurmala, Valmiera and Sigulda, according to Citadele’s information on payments with payment cards of neighboring countries in Latvia.

Estonians have used the opportunity to go to Latvia more actively than Lithuanians – in June, compared to April, the number of purchases with payment cards issued in Estonia and 10 times increased in Lithuania.

Estonians have become especially interested in visiting Lithuania – in June, compared to April, payments with cards issued in Estonia in Lithuania have increased 43 times.

In general, Latvians still visit Lithuania about twice as often as Estonians, according to information on payments at POS terminals in June. Latvians are very interested in traveling to Lithuania – the number of purchases with payment cards issued in Latvia in June, compared to April, increased 11 times.

Also last year, Estonians were more active Latvian travelers than Lithuanians. Compared to last year, in June of this year, payments in Latvia with cards issued in Estonia increased by 47%, while with cards issued in Lithuania by 38%.

Ivo Ansbergs, Head of Citadele Card Acceptance and ATM Services, pointed out that payments for purchases at Latvian points of sale with payment cards issued in other countries are one of the indicators of mobility and tourism, and it is a good index for assessing Baltic travel trends.

“The call to replace this summer’s long-distance travel abroad with a tour of one’s own or a neighboring country has been heard, and at the beginning of the summer the residents of the neighboring countries actively took the opportunity to visit Latvia. that interest in small trips to neighboring countries is relatively high, “said Ansbergs.

In mid-May, when opening the borders of the Baltic States, the responsible authorities called for a careful assessment of the need for travel, which was also reflected in the data – in May, compared to April, the number of purchases with Lithuanian and Estonian payment cards in Latvia tripled. In May, Estonian residents were also more active – the number of transactions with Estonian and four times with Lithuanian payment cards increased fourfold.

Similar trends are observed in Lithuania – in May, compared to April, payments with Latvian and Estonian cards in Lithuania more than doubled, but in June, compared to April, already 15 times.

According to Citadele information, in June, Estonians 2.2 times more often than Lithuanians withdrew cash from ATMs in Latvia and 1.5 times more often made purchases with cards at Latvian points of sale. It is interesting that Lithuanians, when arriving in Latvia, rarely withdraw cash from ATMs – both in an emergency situation and in the following months, the number of transactions is equal.
