Russian FM slams the United States on arms control

The Russian foreign minister says that the world is becoming increasingly unstable because the United States does not want to respect arms control regimes.

Speaking at a conference on disarmament in Moscow on Friday, Sergey Lavrov accused the United States of seeing arms control treaties as a constraint on his efforts to strengthen his military.

Russia and the United States have both withdrawn this year from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. The United States has declared that it has withdrawn because of Russia's violations, a claim that the Kremlin denied.

Lavrov reiterated Russia's commitment not to deploy the banned missiles from the treaty until the United States does so and has criticized NATO allies for refusing to make such a commitment.

Lavrov stated that the United States seems reluctant to extend the New START treaty that expires in 2021.
