Sales of food supplements through pharmacies in Russia have decreased for the first time since 2010
For the first time since 2010, sales of food supplements through pharmacies have decreased, both in monetary terms and in packages sold. The main reasons are the decline in household incomes and the flow to other sales channels, particularly in online stores.

At the end of 2018, sales of food supplements (BAAs) in Russia at the retail pharmacy amounted to 53.4 billion rubles, or 326 million packages, derived from data from the monthly retail audit of the Russian pharmaceutical market DSM Group (available from RBC). Compared to 2017, sales fell by 0.6% in monetary terms and by 8.4% in packages. Therefore, the negative dynamics of annual sales of food supplements is the first case since 2010, when compared to 2009, the decline was negative at the level of 0.3% in annual terms.
As noted in the DSM group, sales of food supplements last year were mainly influenced by the decline in revenues in Russia, as well as by the particular attention of the inspection bodies to certain groups of additives, which led to a change in consumption patterns. DSM Group CEO Sergei Shulyak explained to RBC that it is on food supplements that consumers start saving when there is a shortage of funds in the first place, since they are not a necessity, like drugs, and cancellation, as a rule, is not harmful to health. Another reason was the inspection by the supervisory authorities of some categories of food supplements, in particular from erectile dysfunction – the third category, which occupies over 11% of the total market, recalls . During the year, the sales volume of these food supplements decreased in monetary terms by 3%, which could be due, among other things, to the checks by Roszdravnadzor, which revealed the same substances present in the composition, as indicated in the drugs, said the expert.
According to Alexander Zhestkov, executive director of the SRO Union of Supplements to Food Suppliers, from 2017 to 2018, despite the economic situation of the country, there was a fairly significant redistribution in the Russian market in favor of expensive food supplements. The growth of the expensive segment since 2017, both in rubles and packages, is well marked, he noted, and at the same time a sharp reduction in the low cost, particularly after last year's results. This is confirmed by DSM Group data: according to analysts' calculations, the category of food supplements of 500 rubles. was the only one to show an increase in sales: an increase of 11.9% in rubles and 10% in packages compared to 2017. As Zhestkov explains, this is not a reduction in the consumption of supplements food, but a change in the "portrait" of the consumer of supplements: the young and solvent population became interested in them.
