Samsung and Huawei don't really want to sell their first folding screen smartphones

A bluff shot? Presented with brilliance at the beginning of the year, Galaxy Fold and Mate X have difficulty getting started.

Huawei, which had initially mentioned a mid-year launch, has just opened pre-orders for its folding screen smartphone in China. The Mate X will be available in the country on November 15 at a price of 16,999 yuan, around € 2,200.

And in the rest of the world? It is always the mystery. "Our strategy is based on 5G implementations of operators in different regions. […] A global launch is under study", said the Chinese producer a The Verge.

Galaxy Fold, available in France since September 18, although you may have missed it. Unlike Apple, which places the iPhone 11 in a big way in the streets and on TV, Samsung does not seem to have accompanied the exit of its folding screen smartphone from an important advertising campaign.

Also, if you want to buy the Galaxy Fold, you will have to go to the store and more. Only thirty Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom, Fnac, Boulanger and Samsung stores sell the device. And if you order it online, a possibility offered only by SFR is bakeryou will have to go and collect it at one of their stores.

Samsung justifies this marketing very limited by the desire to offer an experience "Super premium", similar to a concierge service, for customers who pay € 2.020. It is also a way to ensure that customers are aware of things that have nothing to do with the Galaxy Fold, even if the review solves the major problems previously raised by the press.

The difficult distribution of Galaxy Fold and Mate X gives the impression in particular that Samsung and Huawei are not sure of their products, expensive as they are fragile. Rarely, Samsung has already announced the Fold suspension period, and it is early, since it is near the end of the year.

So far, these wet firecrackers do not mark the end of folding screen devices. Samsung and Huawei are already working on their next generations, with the mission of transforming what is a technological demonstration into a viable and affordable product. Microsoft he will also do it his way, with a more cautious a priori approach, using two screens instead of just one. 2019 will not be the year of folding screen terminals, will it be 2020?
