Jakarta (ANTARA) – Samsung Electronics is expected to produce up to 800,000 Galaxy Z Fold 2 this year in an effort to increase sales of folding screen devices.
Galaxy Z Fold 2 was officially introduced Tuesday (1/9) with a global launch scheduled for September 18. The foldable device such as a book is priced at US $ 1,999 or around Rp.30 million.
Quoted from Yonhap, Friday, industry insiders said Samsung is expected to produce 700,000 to 800,000 units of the Galaxy Z Fold this year, more than the first-year production volume of its predecessor, the Galaxy Fold.
Samsung is likely to manufacture the Galaxy Z Fold 2 not only in South Korea, but also in Vietnam and Brazil, according to the sources.
“Producing the Galaxy Z Fold from an overseas factory proves that the yield rate has been stable,” said the source. “It looks like Samsung is currently trying to focus on cutting costs for the production of foldable smartphones.”
For the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung focused on improving the user experience and resolving issues with the Galaxy Fold that were raised by consumers.
Galaxy Fold launch, smartphone Samsung’s first fold, was delayed about five months last year due to display issues.
Tech analysts estimate Samsung’s foldable screen device sales could reach 3 million units this year as Samsung expands its line of foldable smartphones.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will compete with the Microsoft Surface Duo and Huawei Mate X2, while the 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip, which will go on sale on September 18, will compete with Motorola’s upgraded Razr foldable phone.
Analysts say Samsung will likely continue to fight its competitors.
“Samsung has reaffirmed its technological prowess in depth smartphone fold, so it’s likely to take a leading position for quite a while, “said Eugene Investment & Securities analyst Roh Kyoung-tak.
“With a diversified fold product line, sales smartphone Samsung’s fold could increase to 8 million units by 2021, “he added.
