Sao Paulo FC fans criticized their team’s players for … a 3-1 victory over Guarani, as they helped local rival Corinthians to advance to the top eight in the state championship.
During the coronavirus pandemic, tournaments are played in individual states, prestigious for Brazilian clubs. Sao Paulo FC players already had a play-off performance, but on Sunday they defeated – despite the reserve team – Guarani 3-1 away.
This did not appeal to a group of fans who criticized Sao Paulo FC players on social media for winning. They were angry at their club as this result helped Sao Paulo’s Coritnhians reach the top eight. The Corinthians team triumphed in the game against Oeste FC 2-0.
“Not always winning a match is the most important thing”, “Hypocrisy of honesty”, “Shame on you” – these are just some of the entries from FC Sao Paulo fans. They also sent a message to coach Fernando Diniz that they are waiting for the final victory in the state championship.
As emphasized by the media, organized fan groups have great power in Brazilian football and often influence management decisions regarding the selection of players or coaches.
