Scientists Find Something in the Stomach of a 120 Million Year Old Dinosaur Fossil – A team of scientists in China managed to find a 120-million-year-old Dromaeosauridae dinosaur fossil with its last meal in its stomach, namely a frog.

More than 120 million years ago, the dinosaurs ate frogs. But not long to eat the frog, the dinosaur died. Even though they died, the dinosaur bones were preserved from the surrounding environment because they underwent fossilization.

The bird-like dinosaur that ate frogs was named by the team of scientists as Daurlong Wangi. According to the team of scientists, the dinosaurs ate food such as fish, mammals and other dinosaurs.

“Dromaeosauridae is a clade of small to medium-sized theropod dinosaurs known from the Cretaceous in both hemispheres,” explained Xuri Wang of the Institute of Geology at the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, quoted from Interesting Engineering, Monday (28/11).

Wang also explained that the dinosaur fossils that ate frogs found in eastern China also added to the diversity of dinosaurs from the Dromaesaurid family. Wang was also amazed by the condition of the dinosaur bones found.

“The Daurlong Wang holotype is a nearly complete, articulated skeleton about 1.5 meters long,” he continued.

The analysis of the fossil, published in the Journal Scientific Reports, explains that a team of scientists found an ancient frog skeleton in its gut. The discovery is the first known case of preservation in parts of the dinosaur’s intestines.

“Alimentary canal reconstructions in extinct species, including dinosaurs, can be inferred, indirectly, from the remains of intestinal contents… The Daurlong Wangi specimen represents the first case of gut preservation in a theropod lineage very close to the ancestor of birds,” explained Wang.

The team of scientists believe the bird-like dinosaur lived in the Early Cretaceous Period around 145 – 100 million years ago.

Previously, another dinosaur fossil was found in 2019. At that time, a team of scientists found blue dinosaur feathers. Analysis by Frane Babarovic and her team from the University of Bristol showed that blue fur is distinct from black, reddish brown, and gray melanosomes.

Then last June, a team of researchers from Delhi University India found abnormal dinosaur eggs because they had many shells. It was the first abnormal discovery of dinosaur eggs in the history of fossil discoveries.
