Astronomers said they received the first detailed images of a supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way, which showed emissions of an unusual shape, not predicted by the theory.
Scientists used the EventHorizonTelescope telescopes to study a supermassive black hole located in the constellation of Sagittarius at a distance of 26,000 light years from Earth. The property is located in the heart of the Via Lattea. A black hole does not emit light and the disk of matter that goes around it is not distinguishable from that of neutron stars. Therefore, the researchers tried to capture its “shadow” – a dark area against the background of visible radiation. The filming results will be made public in the spring of 2019. Now the scientists complete the data processing. It is reported by The Guardian.

The scientific project leader, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Rashid Sunyaev, said that Spectrum-RG will be able to show how black holes merge and gamma ray bursts are born. Furthermore, the Spectrum-WG can determine relatively precisely when the sun goes out. An astrophysical observatory with the help of X-ray waves can look into the distant past of our Universe.
