Experts have figured out how to properly sanitize clothes to get rid of coronavirus. So, they came to the conclusion that an hour and a half wash with powder at 60 ° C was enough to inactivate SARS-Cov-2. This method does not harm the tissue, unlike alcohol processing, Izvestia reported.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, coronavirus can live on various surfaces, including plastic and stainless steel, for up to several days, so the pathogen can remain on clothing and shoes when interacting with COVID-19 and become a source of infection.
A few years ago, scientists from the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention established at what temperatures the SARS virus, similar to coronavirus, dies.
Strains from the patient’s throat were kept from 15 minutes to two hours at six different temperatures. The activity persisted from 4 to 37 degrees even after two hours of exposure. With an increase in temperature and a period of incubation duration, the cytopathic effect began to weaken and completely disappeared.
When treated with temperatures of 56, 67 and 75 ° C for one and a half hours, hours and 30 minutes, respectively, the virus was completely inactivated. Short exposure to high temperatures also reduced the ability of the virus to invade humans or animals.
“The inactivation temperature of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV 2 will definitely be the same. The differences in the genomes are only 20%, and the overall structure of the viral particles and the set of proteins are the same. In addition to the temperature, surfactants contained in any washing powder are needed. So, in my opinion, even a half-hour wash at 60 ° C will make clothes safe “– noted the head of the laboratory of biotechnology and virology at Novosibirsk State University, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergey Netesov.
After returning home, clothes must be carried before the washing machine in the bag. If some items of clothing are not subject to heat treatment, you can leave them in a sealed bag for two to three weeks, after which the virus will die itself.
An outbreak of pneumonia of an unknown nature in the city of Wuhan, Chinese authorities reported to WHO on December 31, 2019. Later it became known that the cause of the disease was a new type of coronavirus, called COVID-19. On March 11, 2020, WHO announced an outbreak of a new infection pandemic.
As of April 1, cases have been reported in more than 180 countries. According to the American Johns Hopkins Institute, the number of patients with coronavirus worldwide exceeded 911.3 thousand. The victims of the pandemic were 45,497 people.
Over the last day in Russia, another 440 cases of coronavirus infection have been detected. The total number of infected COVID-19 increased to 2777. 24 people died.
