Six people – five of them children – died and about 35 others were injured in a precipitous escape of panicked spectators in a small town on the Italian Adriatic coast, authorities said.
Three girls, two boys and an adult woman, who had accompanied her daughter to the discotheque in Corinaldo, died last Saturday, when an Italian rapper was entertaining the crowd, police chief Oreste Capocasa said in nearby Ancona.
The audience at the rapper Sfera Ebbasta's concert at the Lanterna Azzurra discotheque went to the exits after someone sprayed a substance similar to pepper spray, Italian fire officials and ANSA news agency said.
Twelve of the 35 wounded were in serious condition, Capocasa said.
The ages of the victims were not immediately given. It was not immediately clear how many people were inside when the party escaped or the club's maximum capacity.
An adolescent told ANSA that he discovered that at least one of the emergency exits was blocked when he tried to escape. The report states that the authorities were investigating whether emergency exits worked.
