Lionel Messi revealed the details of his departure from Barcelona last summer, as well as the possibility of winning the Ballon d’Or for the seventh time in his history.
The French magazine “France Football” conducted a lengthy interview with the Argentine star after it announced the preliminary list of candidates to win the Ballon d’Or 2021.
And all of the following came in Messi’s interview with the French magazine:
“I didn’t expect it at all, in my mind, I would go back to Barcelona, sign and start training right away.”
“I thought everything was set up and I just needed to sign it. But when I got there, they told me it was no longer possible. They told me I couldn’t stay and that I had to find a new club because they couldn’t renew my contract. I changed my plans.”
“It was very difficult to accept it. To think we would have to leave our house, the family had to turn their lives upside down, the children had to change schools and come with us to a completely new place.”
“It was the first time this happened in my career. I had decided to end my career with Barcelona. It was difficult, but we passed the test together. I went through a lot of things in my mind, but he had no choice but to leave.”
Paris Saint-Germain show
“Paris Saint-Germain offered me the opportunity to join, I had other offers, but I admit that it was a very quick agreement with PSG. It was not easy because everything had to be done quickly, practically overnight.”
“I was tempted by the project, the ambitions of the club, the players they have and the group. All these things made it easier to come to an agreement. Having friends at the club like Neymar and Di Maria was important, because I knew I was going to a new country and I had to start from scratch.” .
“I knew I had friends in the dressing room, which made it easy to adapt. At the Copa they kept asking me if I was going to join them, but always in jest, because they knew I wanted to stay in Barcelona. So for them, it was a surprise when I said I was going to Paris. Saint Germain”.
Winning the Champions League
“It’s everyone’s dream here at Saint-Germain, the club has been working towards that goal for a few years and has been getting close. From a personal point of view, it’s the same for me.”
“I would like to win the Champions League again, as I said in Barcelona. It is a great and difficult competition to win. But this group of players has what it takes.”
“It is true that this is the focus of Paris Saint-Germain, but there are other strong teams like Chelsea, Manchester teams, Real Madrid, Inter and Bayern Munich. They are all great teams.”
“We have great individuals, but we still get to know each other and build a team. To win important trophies you have to play as a team. That’s why I think we are one step behind these other clubs, because they have more collective experience than we do.”
Winning the Golden Ball
“I don’t think I’m the favorite and I don’t like to talk about it until the result comes out, it would be great to win another title, it’s really amazing to be the only player to win it 6 times.”
“Seventh place would be amazing. Last summer, I won the Copa America which was missing and that was the top for me. If I keep winning the Ballon d’Or again, I will be very happy and very grateful, but I don’t think about it.”
“In my team there are at least two players that I would vote for: Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. Then there is Robert Lewandowski who had a great year. But there is also Karim Benzema.”
“We know titles are important now. The Champions League, Euro and Copa America always have a huge impact on the vote.”
“The French League is more physical than the Spanish League.”
“Here, the teams are stronger for me and the matches are very close, with little space.”
