Study on Covid-19 vaccine blocked for lack of money – rts.ch

A study on the vaccination against the coronavirus cannot be carried out in Switzerland for lack of money, writes the NZZ am Sonntag. In addition, the country is on the threshold of an exponential growth in contamination, according to the new head of the Covid-19 working group of the Federal Council, says the SonntagsZeitung.

Everything is ready in six of the country’s largest hospitals for the first large-scale study of a vaccine against Covid-19, but eight million francs are missing.

A request for partial funding of the project was filed with the Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP) four weeks ago, but the request has so far remained unanswered: “It is not planned for the moment to finance studies on the vaccine against Covid-19 “, declares the OFSP in the NZZ on Sunday.

The Federal Council is also late in other files on the coronavirus vaccine, the newspaper said. While several countries, such as the EU or the United States, have already reserved large quantities of future vaccines for their populations, Switzerland has not yet concluded a contract with companies developing them.

Next exponential growth in contamination

The new head of the Covid-19 working group of the Federal Council, Martin Ackermann, warns in the Sunday newspaper that Switzerland is currently on the threshold of an exponential growth in contamination with the new coronavirus.

There is little room for maneuver to ease the restrictive measures imposed to combat the spread of the virus, he adds.

“I am of the opinion that we must now reduce the size of the authorized public events to 100 participants”, emphasizes the expert in microbiology at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.
