In recent years, there have been a number of new diabetes medications that work in completely new and more ways than the older ones.

The trend is towards medicines that, in addition to providing better blood sugar control, have bonus effects such as weight loss and protect the heart, blood vessels and kidneys, says senior physician and professor Peter M Nilsson:

– It is a multi-effect medicine, one could say.

The new medicines are more expensive – and which medicine you get can differ both between the regions and different medical centers or even between doctors in the same medical unit.

– It creates some inequality, says Diabetes Association chairman Björn Ehlin.

The development of new medicines against type 2 diabetes has gone at breakneck speed in recent years. Many new drugs with different mechanisms of action and effects have come onto the market.

– There is a big scientific debate going on about which of the various new diabetes medications to choose for different types of patients, says Peter M Nilsson, professor of clinical cardiovascular research and senior physician at the clinical internal medicine research unit at Skåne University Hospital, SUS, in Malmö.
