THE BALL – In the midst of many constraints, the draw was held for the La Liga calendar (Spain)

This Thursday, the draw for the 2022/23 edition of La Liga took place. A ceremony that was marked by the many constraints imposed by the competition’s own organization and by the clubs.

For security reasons, La Liga has determined that two clubs from the same city cannot play at home at the same time and that games should be avoided on weekends when there are local festivities. Espanyol asked to have the first match away from home; Celta de Vigo wanted to be a visitor in the rounds that will be played in the first two weeks of September due to a concert in Balaidos; and finally, Villarreal asked to play as many games away from home as possible in the first round as La Cerámica will be under construction until the end of the calendar year.

Given all this, La Liga will once again have an asymmetrical calendar, designed to accommodate all requests. Matchday one, on August 14, is marked by the visit of champions Real Madrid to newly promoted Almería. Note also the reception of Barcelona against Rayo Vallecano and the Madrid duel between Atlético and Getafe.

As for the classic between Real Madrid and Barcelona, the draw has decided that the first round will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu on October 16, while the second match, at Camp Nou, will take place on March 19. The fight for the city of Madrid starts on September 18, with Atlético welcoming Real, with the second game taking place on February 26.

During this time, La Liga will define private matches in the United States and Mexico, as an action to promote the championship.
