The commander of Brigade Nord cannot imagine an army without tanks

– I register that the government has decided to proceed with the acquisition of tanks. Beyond that, I have no comments. It is not my job to comment on this, says Brigade Commander Berglund Aftenposten.

But he admits that he was surprised that Chief of Defense Eirik Kristoffersen advised against buying new tanks. If this is the outcome, Berglund believes that the Norwegian defense will be weakened.

– Without new tanks, we will be missing a significant component of the combat power we need. The tanks are what have the ability to duel with an opponent on the ground and move over long distances. And create the conditions for using the other means we have available, such as artillery, he says.

The chief of defense does not want to comment on the matter to Aftenposten, beyond confirming that he has given advice not to buy tanks.

The signing of the agreement on the purchase of new tanks has been announced in mid-December. It is not clear who will get the contract. The choice is between the German Leopard 2A7 and the South Korean K2 Black Panther.
