Australian John Coates, an influential member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), admitted that there were “real problems” with a view to the organization of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 despite their postponement by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. “There will be 11,000 athletes, 5,000 officials and coaches, 20,000 members of the media, there are 4,000 people working on the organization of the Games at this time, to which must be added 60,000 volunteers,” recalled the head of the Australian Olympic Committee during of a conference organized Thursday by the press group News Corp.
“The Games can only take place in 2021, we cannot postpone them again and we must assume that there will be no vaccine (against the coronavirus), or if there is one , we will not have enough time to share it all over the world, ”said the former IOC Vice-President. Johns Coates, who chairs the IOC coordination committee for the Olympic Games-2020, gave an appointment next October to define the arrangements for the Tokyo Games to take place if the pandemic is brought under control.
