The ESD Competence Center Education – Sustainability – Municipality is celebrating its start on January 26th with a digital event under the motto “Regional educational landscapes – designing ESD together”. Invited are actors from politics, administration and civil society in municipalities as well as researchers who are dedicated to the topic of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). ESD is seen as a key to social change. The aim of the educational concept is that every person learns sustainability or sustainable behavior and can act accordingly.

Municipalities play a special role in this. Christian Luft, State Secretary at the BMBF, explains: “Education for sustainable development is an essential key to sustainability and the achievement of the United Nations’ sustainability goals. This is why the Federal Ministry of Education is also expanding its commitment locally. Because our municipalities are among the most important decision-making levels for education in our country. For this reason, the BMBF is funding a new, essential component for the implementation of the National ESD Action Plan at the municipal level with the ESD competence center Education – Sustainability – Municipality.

In future, the ESD Competence Center will support 50 model municipalities in systematically developing ESD and anchoring it in their own educational landscape. To this end, knowledge and experience are bundled and made accessible in a targeted manner: on-site process support provides technical and methodological impulses, organizes networking and peer learning situations and qualifies employees in communal educational landscapes. At the same time, an accompanying scientific research evaluates the processes on site and allows the results to flow continuously into the process support. “With this combination of practical and scientific expertise, we see ourselves as a catalyst for ESD in communal educational landscapes,” says Dr. Jörg Eulenberger, project manager of the ESD competence center in the north-east and network coordinator. He adds: “The many challenges in the ESD area have in common that the approaches lead to a common understanding – both among political actors, local government, civil society groups and in academia. Knowledge can be generated and experiences exchanged through cooperation at both national and local level. That is why I am particularly happy to see many interested participants nationwide at our kick-off event. “
The ESD competence center is a joint project that is being implemented by three partners. The association includes the German Youth Institute e. V. (DJI), the sponsoring association for municipal education management Lower Saxony e. V. and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ Leipzig).
