The European Football Leagues opposed the World Cup every two years

Representatives of major European football leagues at the General Assembly in Milan rejected FIFA’s proposal to host the World Cup every two years. According to the association, the new concept would damage the sports and economic power of domestic league competitions. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Czech League Football Association.

FIFA informed more about the intention to hold the championship in early September. The proposal was supported by the African confederation CAF and the Asian AFC, while UEFA, the South American confederation CONMEBOL, fan groups and the players’ association FIFPRO are also strongly opposed. Recently, the International Olympic Committee also opposed it, according to which the organization of a football World Cup would damage the diversity and development of other sports.

European Leagues brings together European competitions, including the best ones such as the Bundesliga, Premier League and La Liga. The LFA has been part of the organization since 2018.
