The threat of the coronavirus epidemic frightened the authorities and residents of Karelia more than AIDS.

Every third Sunday of May, the world celebrates AIDS Day, a deadly disease that was even called the “plague of the 20th century” at the end of the last century. The number of those who died from the consequences of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus has exceeded 40 million people. But against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic that caused global shock at the beginning of this year, only doctors, civil activists and volunteers involved in prevention campaigns or helping victims remember the millions who died from HIV, although the number of coronavirus victims in the world is not comparable to AIDS losses .

Surprisingly, the first death from a new infection made more impression on the residents of Karelia than the 30 fatal cases of HIV-infected that were reported in the republic this year. According to the data of the regional AIDS Center, by the beginning of May in Karelia more than 2.6 thousand infected with immunodeficiency virus were detected, which is 13 times more than the number of residents of the republic who have confirmed coronavirus, but for some reason the Karelian authorities do not require the population to use condoms, as medical masks, although HIV, unlike coronavirus, remains with the infected forever.
