John Coates, head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission, spoke about the special conditions for hosting the Tokyo Olympics in the summer of 2021. His words are quoted by Reuters.
Coates said that the Olympics could not be postponed, so the IOC is working on various scenarios for its holding. According to him, it is possible to quarantine the Olympic village, limit the presence of spectators at the facilities, as well as separate athletes from fans and media representatives. “We will have a number of scenarios. But it can be Games that are completely different from what we are used to, ”concluded the head of the commission.
On May 21, IOC President Thomas Bach announced that the Tokyo Olympics would have to be canceled if it could not be held next summer. He noted that he would not like to host the Games without spectators.
On March 24, the 2020 Olympic Games were postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The idea to postpone the start of the competition belongs to the Japanese government.
