It has already been reported that In a letter to the IIHF, Latvia invited the planned hockey championship games in Belarus elsewhere, taking into account the political situation in Belarus. The Prime Minister of Latvia Krišjānis Kariņš does not see the possibility that Latvia could hold this championship together with Belarus.
Already in the beginning of August, IIHF Vice President Kalervo Kumola announced that he would initiate talks on changing the place of the World Cup. The reason for this initiative was also the opposition demonstrations after the presidential elections in Belarus.
It has been reported unofficially that the Belarusian Hockey Federation is also aware that hosting the World Cup could cause problems in the current circumstances, but so far no official announcement has been made.
