SNB chief Jordan: Swiss prosperity at risk

Switzerland will have years to chew on the cost of the corona crisis, says National Bank President (SNB) Thomas Jordan. The crisis is dramatic worldwide and is also hitting the local economy hard. The activity of the Swiss economy is currently only around 70 to 80 percent of normal levels, Jordan told the “SonntagsZeitung”. This causes costs of CHF 11 billion to CHF 17 billion per month. Many may not yet be able to imagine what these figures meant for Switzerland’s prosperity, Jordan emphasizes. The greatest economic downturn since World War II or the great depression of the 1930s is to be expected.

Now it shows that there will be aftermath of the corona crisis for longer. If the Swiss economy does not recover quickly, it is possible that healthy companies that would have survived a normal recession would also perish and that jobs would also be lost. The National Bank sees its role in keeping monetary conditions at an adequate level. Exchange rate and interest rate played a very important role at the moment. On the foreign exchange market, the SNB is doing everything it can to intervene to reduce the upward pressure on the Swiss franc. The greatest recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s, triggered by the coronavirus crisis, had led to “enormous upward pressure” on the franc,

“If necessary, we still have room to maneuver,” Jordan told the newspaper “Tribune de Geneve”. The franc rose against the euro. Nevertheless, the multi-billion dollar interventions would have had a great impact. “Without the National Bank’s monetary policy, we would see a completely different franc exchange rate in the current situation,” Jordan said.

Experts: mosquitoes do not transmit virus

According to current knowledge, mosquitoes pose no danger in the corona pandemic. The novel coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 is transmitted by droplet infection. According to the current state of knowledge, the virus cannot get into the body with the bite of a mosquito, said mosquito expert Doreen Werner from the Leibniz Center for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF).

This is also confirmed by Peter Ben Embarek, WHO expert for infections that can be transmitted from animal to human or vice versa. Studies have looked at various parasites – including mosquitoes – and found no transmission. “These viruses have specific affinities for certain species, and they can only dock to certain cells – they cannot infect every species they come into contact with,” said Ben Embarek.
