“The most likely scenario I’ve heard is that he’s going to boycott the inauguration.”

How is your relationship with the family at the moment?
I have no relationship whatsoever, but I didn’t have one before I published the book.

Are you still talking to your aunt, Maryanne Trump Barry, whose private conversations with you were essential to key parts of the book?
For whatever reason, and I have no idea why, but I’d say in June 2018, he stopped talking to me.

I think some people, because of the negative things she had to say about her brother, and the fact that the recordings of those conversations were made public, wondered if she had given her “blessing” silently. Does that seem to be the case?
I don’t think that’s the case at all.

Did you think Trump was going to lose the election?
I did it. I also felt strongly that a landslide victory was necessary, and we did not get it. Thank goodness Joe Biden won hands-down, but we really needed a repudiation not just from Donald, but from the entire match that allowed it. Seventy-three million votes is insane. I don’t understand how he got more than 20 million, but he did.

Did you think that Trump’s reaction to defeat would be so extreme that he and his people would do everything possible to challenge the reality of the results?
I’m not surprised by any of that. I am a bit surprised, and I know I should have learned my lesson by now, but I am amazed that the Republican leadership has been so cowardly about jeopardizing our democracy and the exemplary nature of our voting system.
