Did you get it? A new movie on Netflix presents a scream in Syracuse.
"Point Blank", directed by Syracuse University student Joe Lynch, was previewed at the Friday streaming service. The action thriller is played by Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo, both of whom appeared in two films "Captain America" and "Avengers: Endgame", as an ER nurse and the suspect in the murder with which he must collaborate to save his wife pregnant while fighting rival criminals and corrupt cops along the way.
About 26 minutes into the film, the characters meet at a Cincinnati train station while a PA system announces: "Last call, time 11.05am for Syracuse is embarkation time".
The reference, slipped in between a chase scene and a good fight in a car wash, serves as a brief nod to Lynch's alma mater – and his wife's hometown. The director met his wife Briana Mackay, a Cicero-North Syracuse High School graduate whose family still lives in central New York, while both have participated in SU.
Lynch filmed two short films while attending Syracuse University, "mAHARBA" and "hiBeams", which earned him the director's award in 1999 in The Long Island Voice. He graduated in 1998 with a degree in visual and performing arts, and dedicated his time to SU cultivating his interest in acting, writing and directing.
"Since I was already shooting short films and developing my visual style thanks to the vision of" Evil Dead 2 "," Goodfellas "and" Raising Arizona ", too often as a child … (Studying) the dramatic film seemed to be the right choice "he told syracuse.com in 2013.
"Point Blank" also includes fun references to films such as "Die Hard", "Scarface", "The Warriors" and "Spartacus", as well as Oscar-winning director William Friedkin and "To Live in Die in LA". Friedkin also directed "The Exorcist", "The French Connection" and "Blue Chips" (with a cameo from Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim).
Lynch's titles include action films such as "Everly" (starring Salma Hayek), "Knights of Badassdom" (Peter Dinklage) and "Mayhem" (Steven Yeun), in addition to the horror "Wrong Turn 2 "and the television series" Holliston ". Lynch also makes a fun cameo in "Point Blank" as a journalist cameraman.
"Point Blank", also played by Marcia Gay Harden, Teyonah Parris and Christian Cooke, is now streamed on Netflix.
