There are officially nine contaminations in the country, but a young teenager who tested positive for the coronavirus a few weeks ago, would also be a carrier of the Omicron variant, according to a new analysis. It is suspected that the contamination took place in a school in Melle in the province of East Flanders, De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad and Gazet van Antwerpen reported on Monday.
The Flemish health agency (Agentschap Zorg en Gezondheid) confirms that several contaminations have taken place in this school. The variant is said to have reached this establishment after a member of the Belgian waterpolo team was infected in the Czech Republic in mid-November in the city of Brno. The virologist Emmanuel André had already mentioned Friday that this was a cluster of the known Omicron variant.
“We can link this cluster of infections to a group in the Czech Republic,” confirmed Ria Vandenreyt of the Flemish health agency.
This suggests that the Omicron variant was therefore probably spreading in Belgium earlier than initially estimated.
