The president of the self-proclaimed republic of Nagorno Karabakh, Samvel Shajramanián, today decreed the dissolution of the separatist entity in the territory of Azerbaijan.
“All state bodies and organizations dependent on them must be dissolved before January 1, 2024and the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) ceases to exist,” says the decree collected by Armenian media.
More than half of the population of Nagorno Karabakh, an Azerbaijani territory populated by Armenians, has already left their homes since Sunday and moved to Armenia after the Azeri military operation on the 19th, the Government of Yerevan reported today.
“At 04.00 GMT, 65,036 people forcibly displaced from Nagorno Karabakh had arrived in Armenia,” said Nazeli Baghdasarián, spokesperson for Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinián, on her Facebook social network account.
Azerbaijan’s lightning military operation triggered a unparalleled exodus in the South Caucasus since the war in which the Armenians took over the territory when the Soviet Union disintegrated, and hundreds of thousands of Azeris fled, Reuters specifies.
