For the first time online on April 22, the situation in Syria will be discussed by the foreign ministers of Russia, Turkey and Iran. These three countries are guarantors of the Astana format for resolving the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic.
The talks between the foreign ministers of the three countries will be devoted to the situation in Idlib province and the work of the Syrian constitutional committee, TASS. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad spoke about the upcoming consultations of diplomats from Iran, Turkey and Russia. In Syria, there are clashes between different groups of militants. This is due to ideological differences between them.
The diplomatic debate was influenced by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The last round of negotiations in the Astana format was held in the capital of Kazakhstan on December 10-11, 2019. The next meeting was scheduled to be held in March in Iran. But the official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Abbas Mousavi, stated that the epidemic situation in the country does not allow such a meeting to be organized, therefore, for the first time, the foreign ministers chose the video conferencing mode for communication.
