The Tanunda hotel in Barossa Valley was saved from the fire

The owner of an iconic hotel in the Barossa Valley does not know when the kitchen will work again after it was destroyed by a fire Saturday night.

Firefighters were called to the Tanunda Hotel on Murray St when the alarm went off at 1.30pm on Sunday.

Smoke was detected from the kitchen and from a warehouse at the back of the building.

The rapid action of the fire brigade prevented the flame from spreading to the pub and housing, but its kitchen was completely destroyed.

The electricity, gas and water of the hotel were deactivated while guests in their second floor rooms were transferred to another apartment building.

The hotel will be closed on Sundays with builders expecting to visit the site early in the week to examine the damage.

The cause was confirmed as not suspected.
