The United States Embassy in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, recommended that its citizens leave the country as soon as possible, using commercial or private flights, in an alert published this Wednesday on its website.
“Given the current security situation and infrastructure problems, US citizens in Haiti must leave the country as soon as possible using commercial or private means of transportation,” the statement read.
Many airlines currently offer flights from Haiti’s international airports (Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien), the embassy added.
“Flights fill up quickly and seats may not be available for up to several days, or even several weeks, before departure,” the information added.
“US citizens wishing to leave Port-au-Prince should follow local information and only do so when deemed safe,” the statement said.
