A woman died after being quenched in gasoline and turned into a fireball by her jealous boyfriend.
Anastasia Kovaleva, 22, was declared struck by Vitaly Chaikovsky, 28, who reportedly wanted to frighten her not to discharge him.
Chaikovsky is accused of performing the shocking act on July 2 in the city of Zaporizhia, in the south of Ukraine.
On the evening of that day, Chaikovsky allegedly accused Anastasia of flirting with other men, reportedly.
The couple started arguing and soon after Anastasia left their apartment to take a walk and give her jealous boyfriend time to calm down, reports said.
While he was away, Chaikovsky presumably went to a nearby gas station and bought a gas bottle.
He then allegedly waited for her to return near the entrance to their apartment building, local media report.
When Anastasia approaches the place, Chaikovsky is accused of giving her some liquid and using his lighter to set her on fire.
According to witnesses, the woman immediately turned into a fireball that screamed in unbearable pain.
Chaikovsky presumably then tore off his shirt and tried to put out the fire.
Nearby Valentina told local media: "We heard horrible screams. Someone was shouting," A woman is burning!
& # 39; & # 39; My husband grabbed a can of water and grabbed a blanket and we ran to the scene.
& # 39; & # 39; We managed to get the victim out and called the emergency services. & # 39; & # 39;
Anastasia was rushed into intensive care in critical conditions. She was diagnosed with severe burns at 90% of her body.
Paramedic Olga Zakharchenko said: "The victim's condition was very serious. He received severe burns to the head, upper body and arms."
The doctors at Zaporizhia City Hospital performed several skin transplant operations, but Anastasia died yesterday despite all efforts to save her life.
Vitaly Chaikovsky was arrested at the scene. The police found him sitting on the ground and looking at his hands covered with burns.
The man received medical assistance and was taken into custody. He confessed to the crime by saying "he just wanted to scare Anastasia and make sure he wouldn't dump him."
Later, during the hearings, Chaikovsky said, "I didn't want to hurt her. I wanted to scare her and make sure she wouldn't dump me."
The victim's friend told local media: "Anastasia really loved him and was about to marry him.
& # 39; & # 39; Vitaly was constantly jealous of her. He read every message on his phone. He was always nervous and suspicious when he was chatting with his male friends or acquaintances.
"They were together for a year and he was jealous of her from the beginning of their relationship."
Chaikovsky has been accused of attempted murder but now, after Anastasia's death, his case should be treated as a murder.
He will face 15 years in prison if found guilty. The investigation is ongoing.
