These Burger King photos are real, but there’s a catch

Have you seen those photos on social media showing Burger King items from Germany what turns your stomach? Believe it or not, the photos are real, but there is a big problem: all the food that is advertised was available for precisely one day in one place in Berlin. These are not the usual items sold at Burger King in Germany, as many people seem to think.

As Bill Oakley, former writer of The Simpson turned fast food critic, noted in Twitter, all the photos were part of a Mother’s Day promo having a bit of fun with the idea that some people crave weird foods during pregnancy. They called it the “Pregnancy Whopper” campaign and even just looking at some of the burgers can make you cringe.

The ad featured Whoppers that had pickles with whipped cream (above), bananas with eggs, ice cream with green olives, cucumbers with jam, fish sticks with applesauce, and strawberry ice cream with fries. But the strangest combinations may have been the Whoopers containing bratwurst sausage and chocolate syrup, or currywurst and fried herring. There was also a raspberry cake packed with several layers of meat.

If you missed this May 8 promotion in Berlin, you won’t be able to try these weird concoctions at Burger King. Although, we suppose, nothing prevents you from making these monstrosities at home. And if you need inspiration, there’s a video version of the ad available at YouTube and with subtitles in English.

US fast food brands have spent the last 50 years spreading across the globe, often adapting signature foods to meet local demands. For example, you won’t find beef burgers at McDonald’s locations in India. But you can get the McSpicy Paneer or the McAloo Tikkiwhich is a hamburger made of potatoes and peas that comes with ketchup, tomatoes and onions.

But inventions like the currywurst and the fried herring burger won’t be found on any menu outside of Berlin, Germany, for that one day. If you want to see more of the very real burgers Burger King wanted to exist for their one-day promotion, here are several snapshots. You’re warned.
