Beginning the work on the land they had just bought, a couple of Tourrettes-sur-Loup, in the Maritime Alps, made a grisly discovery Thursday: dozens of dead cats were buried in this plot of 5,200 m2, reports Nice-Matin.
It was in a bag of croquettes that discovered the first two bodies. Then they discovered dozens more, 53 in total, "liquefied, rotting or just bones," they told the local newspaper, adding that "it was absolutely horrible".
An investigation was opened to the gendarmerie after filing the couple's complaints and an animal defense association. Investigations should first be directed to the former owner of the land, a man who has collected stray cats. Three tracks are possible: an epidemic, a fur trade or an act of cruelty.
