Tim Merlier (BEL, Alpecin-Fenix) won the 2021 edition of the Grand Prix Samyn. After a race animated by several sterile attacks, victory was finally disputed in a sprint in a group of about thirty runners.
Mathieu van der Poel (PB, Alpecin-Fenix) broke his handlebars and could not defend his chances, he got up and his teammate Tim Merlier took advantage of it. The ex-Belgian champion was the fastest and beat the surprising Norwegian rider Rasmus Tiller (NOR, Uno-X Pro Cycling Team) et Andrea Pasqualon (ITA, Intermarché Wanty Gobert). Unlucky, with a puncture in the last 15 kilometers, Sep Vanmarcke (BEL, Israel Start-Up Nation) still manages to rank 4th.
van der Poel wanted victory but his handlebars broke
“I am happy to have concluded the team’s work with a victory”, said Tim Merlier before stepping onto the podium. “We had a good team today and on the bus this morning at the start, we said it was for us! We rode well together, as a team. Mathieu van der Poel wanted to play for victory but broke his handlebars in the last cobblestone sector. So he said to me: I can’t sprint, I will ride for you “.
