Statistics Lithuania, which was tasked with analyzing data related to SARS-CoV-2 infection, together with the Ministry of Health and medical experts, evaluated data on comorbidities and diagnoses of dead patients immunized with both doses of the vaccine. The available data allow the following conclusions to be drawn for these 24 individuals who died after full vaccination against COVID-19:
10 of the dead had very severe immunosuppressive conditions (transplants, lymphomas). In such conditions, specific vaccine-induced immunity is very difficult to develop. Among these individuals are two dead under the age of 65.
9 were extremely elderly, had critical illnesses, and some of them were patients with end-of-life oncology in supportive care facilities.
4 had serious pathologies and diseases associated with an extremely high risk of death from COVID-19.
1 deceased had no obvious medical conditions that would explain the inadequate development of an immune response: an elderly person diagnosed with mild cardiovascular pathology.
According to the available preliminary data, all vaccines used in Lithuania are highly effective in protecting against SARS-CoV-2 infection, hospitalization for COVID-19 and death from COVID-19. An analysis and report on the efficacy of vaccines and possible side effects is being prepared by Statistics Lithuania and will be published in the near future.
