Tradition: 30 years of Porsche 911 (type 964)

SP-X / Cologne. For the legendary Porsche chief designer, Helmuth Bott arrived the best for last: with the presentation of 30 years ago, Porsche 911 Carrera (Type 964) taken under its sports driving icon was taken for a technically feasible Olympus among the Vmax stars at high volume. For this, Bott gave the boxer many of the technical skills that had previously rewarded the outrageous 959 carrier. Although the new 911 retained the classic 911 contours, compared to the previous model, the 15-year G model, the 85 percent of the parts had been modified. Above all the variable four-wheel drive, with which Carrera 4 was offered from the beginning, was considered revolutionary and made him the opinion of many specialized media for "the best 911 ever". The sometimes difficult reactions of the Heckangetriebenen in the border area were now history. This, however, thanks to a completely new suspension with alloy swing arms and coil springs instead of the old torsion bar suspensions. Half a year later, the Carrera 2 still relied on the typical combination of rear-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive for all traditionalists. In addition to the Carrera, Coupé, Cabriolet and Targa versions they also added new turbos, the 964 program, which culminated with the 280 kW / 381 hp and almost 300 km / h Turbo S of 1991. Helmuth Bott had already left Porsche to work as an independent consultant in Zuffenhausen after more than 35 years. However, he had given his last 911 everything to drive Porsche out of the crisis. In fact, the end of the 80s of the manufacture of sports cars suffered from the huge collapse of the dollar and sales in North America and Germany. The Japanese sports coupes bothered the old four-cylinder 924 and 944, the V8 Coupé 928 was below expectations and even for almost fifteen years the G model of the 911, largely unchanged, needed a technical upgrade that went beyond the new special series. The first signs of a trend reversal came from the very expensive high-tech Porsche 959 designed by Helmuth Bott, which the Svevi launched in 1985 as the athlete of the fastest series of all time. Despite the astronomical high price of 420,000 marks, the limited edition of the 331 kW / 450 hp 959 Turbo with four-wheel drive before the start of the series was out of print – a stroke of genius that Bugatti (EB 110) or Jaguar (XJ 220) could not repeat. For this reason, the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (Type 964) made the combination of air-cooled boxer engine and four-wheel drive three years after the new sports formula for success, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Elfer. In 959, Porsche's developers had trained, "before we used the integral technology and anti-lock brakes in the series," Helmuth Bott told reporters. Porsche did not fail to experience all-wheel drive otherwise, because as early as 1934 Ferdinand Porsche had presented a first rear-wheel drive layout with all-wheel drive. In Carrera 4 of 1988, the engine's transmission block was connected by a transaxle tube to the front axle differential and the driving force was directed at 69 percent at the rear axle to preserve the 9-penalty that driving on dry road. Unlike smoothness, electronics changed the distribution of force. The customers were enthusiastic: no car with optional all-wheel drive got an order share on all the higher wheels, not even the Audi with the Quattro concept could counter. At the same time, Porsche fans once again accepted the inflationary rise in prices of the new "Wunder von Weissach", as the media called the 911 Carrera 4, trimmed to victory in the Porsche development center. Whether Ferrari Mondial, Maserati Karif, Lotus Esprit or Aston Martin V8 – against now at least 184 kW / 250 hp and of course still fully usable for everyday use Porsche 911 Carrera remained the actor European support system Asphaltbrenner. Even the fast and now expensive samurai like Toyota Supra Turbo or Mazda RX-7 Turbo could hardly score against the Stuttgart boxers in strength training. This showed the renewed penalty also from third place in the German classifications of the luxury class, directly behind the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Thus, the 964 series once again demonstrated its special status among athletes : as the only pilot who has also served as a business jet. The head of the development of Porsche, Helmuth Bott, was satisfied and considered his latest rigor in interviews as the best and suitable for the 21st century. For the 964 type it received a 3.6-liter boxed air-cooled boxer and a standard three-way catalytic converter, which thanks to the dual ignition is cheaper than its predecessor and has met the emission standards provided only for the new Millennium. All this in an aerodynamically fluid body, in which the already bumper-like rails had been cleverly integrated as the recessed rear spoiler, which moved automatically at 80 km / h. Certainly there have been criticisms, however, so in the media sometimes the windowsills complained that they seemed to be retrofitted. Or the smaller front compartment of the Carrera 4, because the all-wheel drive technology required tax. Ultimately, however, he surpassed the excitement of the sports car, whose purchase was justified on the basis of purely rational considerations: "You can have breakfast longer." You're back for dinner earlier. a better family car? "The fastest, nicest and even lighter spoilers: the Carrera RS was introduced in 1991, which was a good 25 percent more expensive than a normal penalty, but the airbags, power steering and functions were missing luxury like the air conditioning or the radio even 175 kilograms less weighed. What made him interact with the boxer boosted to 191 kW / 260 hp for a raging beast, as were the testers. So really strong and impetuous, but in reality it was again just the turbo, initially with proven 3.3-liter boxer and 235 kW / 320 hp (from 1993 with a new 3.6-liter and 360-hp boxer) and a fixed and gigantic rear wing. The real macho, Ferrari's killer and collectible hearts, however, have chosen the 280 kW / 381 hp Turbo S with carbon rear spoiler and racing suspension. This bullet of almost 300,000 brands, expensive and only 80 times distributed, has lost every Ferrari Testarossa. Incidentally, it was also cheaper. That's why it was enough to order the 911 in fashionable colors that really popped up. For example, violet blue, starred ruby or picky yellow. No established sports car manufacturer at the time showed more courage for the intense colors that irritated the used car buyers later. Beautifully colored and fast enough, the Type 964 has accelerated up to over 74,000 units in five years, then the Type 993 has come to make it even better. Depending on the driving situation, the distribution can be variable.
