Třinecké železárny put into operation a repaired blast furnace

The main goal of the reconstruction was the installation of new elements and technological equipment that correspond to current trends. The changes are intended to streamline the production of pig iron and reduce the environmental burden. The key was the renovation of the lower part of the so-called hearth furnace with new carbon blocks and the lining with new refractory material. Simultaneously with the resumption of production in the furnace, a new wind heater was also put into operation.

“Thanks to the system of modern wind heaters together with the installation of new air preheating assemblies, the consumption of blast furnace heating gas when heating the heaters will be reduced and the production of blast furnace gas itself will be reduced. This will reduce CO2 emissions, ”adds Radek Olszar, Investment Director.

Every year, the sixth blast furnace in Třinec produces more than one million tons of pig iron, which is destined for smelting into steel mills and then to the rolling mills of Třinecké železárny, where specific products or semi-finished products are already produced. The daily capacity is on average 3000 tons.

The furnace has been in operation since 1952, overhauls took place in 1963, 1973, 1985 and 1999. There are 48 regular employees and dozens more take care of maintenance.

Třinecké železárny is the largest metallurgical company in the Czech Republic. Last year, they produced 2.581 million tons of steel. In 2020, the company achieved a profit of 469 million crowns and revenues of 35.1 billion crowns. TŽ’s best-selling product is long-rolled wire, other main products are special bar steel, drawn steel, rails, wide steel, seamless pipes or metallurgical semi-finished products. Including separate operations, TŽ has over 7,000 employees, and there are around 10,000 employees with its subsidiaries.
