This Thursday, the Brazilian Ministry of Health reported that 1,188 deaths and 18,508 infections were registered in the last 24 hours, for a total of 310,087 cases and 20,047 deaths since the outbreak began, AFP reported.
Deaths have increased markedly as the pandemic has broken through amid indifference from President Jair Bolsonaro, who is more concerned that the economy will not collapse. In just 12 days, the country doubled its death toll – from 10,000 to 20,000 – while the health system is on the brink of collapse.
A survey published by the Ministry of Health shows the rapid advance of the virus in Brazil. On March 28, only 297 cities, equivalent to 5.3% of the total in the country, had registered at least one case of coronavirus. This number has increased to 3,488, which is equivalent to 62.6% of Brazilian municipalities.
