When the referee Kuipers showed a yellow card at 1-1 (1-0) at the San Paolo stadium in Naples, in the recovery of Neymar, the memories of the very disappointing for the 2018 Brazilian World Cup. Neymar, the man for theatricality in Russia, had a private feud with Kuipers in the second group meeting, did not feel well protected throughout the tournament and had only partially shown his genius.
In the fourth match of the Champions League group against SSC Napoli (here you get the results), Neymar did a good first half, was involved in almost all the dangerous actions of Paris Saint-Germain and led his team to deserve the first time. But after the break, he let it take the joy of playing. From players more aggressive than Napoli, but also from Kuipers, who misjudged three situations in the eyes of Neymar. Neymar had to be dragged away by teammate Kylian Mbappé once, after his warning, he applauded.
The dilemma of the PSG has different facets, Neymar is not insignificant. If the dribbler often sought after by his teammates play an important role, the team is hard to stop, as the twelve wins in twelve games in Ligue 1 show. But Neymar alone will not win the ambitious Champions League club from Qatar. But this is the declared goal of club boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
How is Financial Fair Play going?
In recent years, the PSG has never exceeded the quarter-finals in the Champions League. What was considered a disappointment in itself was of paramount importance to the strong opponents, to whom Paris had often been hit very early. Yes, there are four or five teams in the premier class who are similar or even better qualified and also want to win. The Champions League title is not won but in the storm on the transfer market.
Now the Parisian arrives, or Qatar, with the football matches looking for another problem. As SPIEGEL and its partners in the European Investigative Collaborations (EIC) research network have shown, the PSG has been raised to billions of euros against the rules of financial fair play to become an international top club – with the help of the current FIFA president Gianni Infantino. (All the story on MIRROR +).
It is not clear if and what consequences threaten, but if the future of Uefa will move further in the dimension of Neymar (222 million euros), the European Football Association should think twice. Especially since the PSG is still under surveillance and only a few days ago, to Cas's complaint, further investigations by the Uefa were presented.
Tuchel wanted to buy differently
Coach Thomas Tuchel finds himself in this difficult situation and knows the goals of his bosses. But he also knows the weaknesses of his team. Nonetheless, Tuchel arrives – at least as regards the votes from Germany – after a negative result almost under pressure, although Khelaifi from the acquisition in 2011 did not liquidate any of his coaches after only one year.
In Paris, however, the sports director Antero Henrique, responsible for the composition of the current team, was interviewed. Tuchel wanted you're sturdy and bailouts; because Henrique did not deliver, however, Juan Bernat and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting were signed on the last day of the transfer window.
Since then, the collaboration between Tuchel and Henrique should be reduced to a minimum. And since the head of the sport must also answer for the extension of the missing contract with Adrien Rabiot, Khelaifi is according to the French media on the side of Tuchel.
If the PSG (5 points) were to leave the difficult group with Napoli (6) and Liverpool (6), Tuchel's mission in Paris will not automatically end. However, he will have imagined the possibilities differently. The current team has too many vulnerabilities, and further financial depravity is uncertain. An upcoming Champions League winner looks different.
