Ultrabook ASUS ZenBook 13 UX331UA review

Ultrabooks have proven to be the ideal typewriter. At ASUS, laptops in this class belong to the ZenBook series and have been released since October 2011. The choice is great: the screen diagonal ranges from 11.6 to 15.6 inches, processors from i3 to i7, weight from 0, 9 to 2.2 kg. One of the latest models came to us for the test, a sort of "trinashka" UX331UA with a new Intel processor of a series of eight thousand.

Complete set, appearance

In a cardboard box, in addition to a laptop, I found only a power supply and a quick paper guide.

The magazine's hero is made in a rigorous office style: smooth edges with no frills of design, right angles, a minimum of graphic delights. The body panels are made of aluminum and the surface is decorated with all types of "textured" processing. The company's website attracts attention to the cover model: "… a shimmering finish that recalls the flickering surface of the crystal". I do not ask for circular markings on the lid, but it looks really nice. Especially if you pull the laptop in the light of day. In the end, it is necessary to test the technique in practice, and it is strange to rest statically on a table weighing 1.1 kg.
The photo shows the reverse side of beauty: dust and fingerprints are clearly visible in the sunlight. But then in nature, where in the dry season it is full of fine suspensions in the air. Home stagnation in one place during the week does not affect the appearance.
On the back – a flat surface with different ventilation slots and rounded edges.
The thickness of the case at the front end – 9 mm, at the distance – 14 mm.
The holes in the front chamfer are perforated.
When working on the couch or on the blanket, the bottom ventilation slots will be covered almost one hundred percent, so the main air intake and discharge area is located at the back of the case.
A notch in the top cover prevents the cooling system from losing the efficiency of heat removal by driving the same air around the rim.
The sides are occupied by some connectors (for standard-sized laptops standards). USB right, microSD card reader and 3.5mm headphone jack. On the left there are two USB (Type-A and Type-C), HDMI and power supply. There are also a couple of indicators – recharge and activity: the position of the sockets is comfortable, but I would like to open the USB sockets on the left side of one another.

Screen, touchpad and keyboard

The 13-inch IPS matrix is well inserted in the top cover, the thickness does not exceed 4.5 mm.
Screen resolution – 1920 x 1080 pixels, matte finish, without touchscreen.
The small frames on the sides do not interfere with the work, even if at the beginning they seem too wide. And the screen should have been raised a little higher, here every 5 mm was added, especially during long work on the knees.
Keyboard without digital unit, but the main set of buttons is life size – 16 x 16 mm, the distance between them is 3.2 mm, the stroke is just over 2 mm
It is convenient to type and navigate in the text, the command line and working in the file manager is not much. The reason for the inconvenience is that the cursor keys are too tight, the big fingers try to press two or three buttons at the same time.
Next to them there is a square "window" of the fingerprint reader. A useful thing with a short but frequent separation from the laptop at work.
The touchpad is ideal for text editors and browsers: the touch area 104 x 74 mm, combined with the keys. In specialized work programs (graphics and video editors) it is better to use the mouse.
And yes, the UX331UA not only extracts office applications and a browser with a dozen pages, thanks to the appropriate filling.

On the motherboard quad core soldered Intel Core i5-8250U, able to accelerate to 3.4 GHz. When all the cores are fully charged, its frequency, unfortunately, does not exceed 1.8 GHz due to the 15-watt thermal package.
8 gigabyte RAM in dual channel mode, type – DDR3
The video card in the test example is built-in, UHD Graphics 620. There are versions with discrete nVidia
The unit is a SSD 2280 with a SATA III interface installed in the M.2 slot. The actual volume is 238 gigabytes, which is sufficient for the operating system and the basic set of programs. Volumetric data should be added to the external disk – there was no space for a hard disk. With a volume shortage, the hard core can be replaced with a similar length (80 mm).
The networks are wireless only – Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2, their operation is ensured by the Intel AC 8265 controller. The sound card is based on the Realtek ALC294 codec, the sound system is designed by Harman-Kardon. The capacity of the integrated battery is 3160 mAh, takes up half of the internal space.

Test results

You can not go far with a processor of fifteen processors, but in Photoshop and Corel Draw works easily, in Sony Vegas only loads from external sources and the final rendering of images slows down. The system is forced to work with smart work first of all on SSDs, there is not a relatively slow processor before performing tasks that require a lot of resources.
For those who love numbers – in the OpenGL test Cinebench R15 showed 53 fps, processor – 597 points. PCMark 10 gave 2783 points, 3D Mark in Bench Time Spy 351 points, in Sky Diver – 4197. The cooling system fan works in an interesting way. It barely reaches up to 89 degrees on the processor, so it increases the speed abruptly, lowers the temperature to 65-70 degrees and keeps it at this level, responding sensitively to the rotation speed of the impeller for heating the crystal.
There is little noise from the only small turbine hidden in the bowels of the body, but the keyboard heats up considerably with a heavy load on the processor. And this is understandable – the total emphasis on compactness, low weight and self-employment, the rest will wait.
The battery life of the UX331UA is very good: 2.5 hours under heavy load, seven hours of work in a text editor. You can watch HD videos or sit on the Internet for six hours. Great car for a short time on long trips or flights. The acoustics, by the way, can easily shout to the children screaming at the three rows of seats, they do not need to take the headphones. The main thing – do not connect things and holes in the table in front of the speakers.

We summarize

What is the bottom line? Ultrabook ZenBook UX331UA ideal for long journeys of office and / or work. Everything you need is available: the width is slightly larger than the A4 sheet, weight 1.1 kg, thickness less than 15 mm, an excellent FullHD screen, a large battery and a pleasant appearance. In minuses you can only note difficulties by increasing the amount of memory and a relatively weak processor. The last inconvenience can be partially offset by an increase in the budget for the purchase of a version with i7-8550U.
The price, in my opinion, is adequate for the tested configuration. True, it was influenced by the dollar jump – about two months ago, the assembly described above cost 5-7 thousand less.
