By decrees of Thursday night, Putin granted independence to the Ukrainian districts of Kherson and Zaporizhia and announced that on Friday he would include four occupied Ukrainian oblasts: Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia into Russia. These decisions are to be approved by the Russian parliament. In February, three days before the Ukrainian invasion, Putin recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk republics.
Putin said he was ready to defend these territories by all means available, pointing out that would be willing to use a nuclear attackto halt Ukraine’s efforts to liberate its sovereign territory.
Putin’s announcement of the plan to annex Ukrainian territories triggered a new wave of international condemnation of Russia. – Any decision to join the annexation of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia oblasts in Ukraine would have no legal basis and deserve condemnation – he said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
