The lifescience group Lonza has come into focus in connection with the US company Moderna and its vaccine. Lonza is to produce the active ingredient for the coveted vaccination as soon as it comes onto the market. US Ambassador Ed McMullen is now denying that the US is putting pressure on Lonza to be the first to get a corona vaccine.
Of course, a corona vaccine will be shared with the world if it is discovered in the United States, McMullen said in an interview with the “Tagesanzeiger”. “Any country that is holding back data in this crisis, hindering scientists and not sharing results is facing the tough questions of all other countries,” he added.
No pressure from the USA?
It is not true that the United States is exerting pressure to have a vaccine manufactured by Lonza in Switzerland first delivered to the United States.
The Americans decide who gets the vaccine, Lonza boss Albert Baehny recently confirmed (BLICK reported).
McMullen: On the contrary, the collaboration between Moderna and Lonza is a perfect example of how the United States and Switzerland are working together to combat this epidemic. Lonza is an important part of the American-Swiss partnership.
Finally, Lonza signed a 10-year cooperation agreement with Moderna in early May. “This agreement will enable the mass production of Moderna’s vaccine against the novel corona virus, which the US government supports with $ 500 million,” says McMullen.
Lonza production lines are planned in the USA, Switzerland and worldwide. It could make 1 billion doses of the vaccine available worldwide. (SDA / uro)
