US-China-Russia Clash Over North Korea at UN Security Council Session

New York

United States of America (USA) together China and Russia engaged in heated debate when discussing the matter North Korea (North Korea) at a Security Council meeting United Nations (UN) which was held on Monday (20/3) local time.

The debate occurred when the three countries argued over who was to blame for North Korea’s barrage of ballistic missile launches and the development of a nuclear weapons program. Thus as reported ReutersTuesday (21/3/2023).

A total of 15 member countries United Nations Security Council held a meeting to discuss what Pyongyang called its largest intercontinental ballistic missile launch, the Hwasong-17, a few days ago. North Korea has been under UN sanctions over its missile and nuclear programs since 2006.

China and Russia blame joint military exercises held by the United States (US) and South Korea (South Korea) for provoking North Korea. Meanwhile the US has accused Beijing and Moscow of further encouraging Pyongyang by shielding the isolated country from more sanctions.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, according to a senior UN official at the hearing, remains “deeply concerned about the divisions that have occurred which have prevented the international community from acting on this matter”.

Russia’s Deputy UN Ambassador Anna Evstigneeva described the US-South Korean military activity as ‘unprecedented’, while China’s Deputy Ambassador Geng Shuang questioned whether it was a defensive exercise and blamed the two countries for escalating tensions.

“These exercises have been going on for a long time, they are being held routinely. They are purely defensive in nature… The United States has no hostile intentions towards the DPRK,” said US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield, using North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. .
