GenPI.co – Two officers Israel were accidentally shot dead by one of their own teams on Wednesday (11/1).
Sources from the Israeli army (IDF) said the incident occurred during a security patrol near their base in the West Bank, Palestine.
An IDF statement on Thursday (12/1) provided few details about the “friendly fire” incident, which Israeli media said involved the Oz Brigade’s elite commando unit, the Egoz Unit in the Jordan Valley.
“The officers were misidentified and mistakenly killed by IDF fire,” the statement said.
The families of the officers identified as Major Ofek Aharon, 28, and Major Itamar Elharar, 26 have been notified.
“A soldier in the unit mistook the actions of the two soldiers for a Palestinian attack, and as a result of gunfire, the two officers were killed,” an army spokesman said on Kan public radio.
The Jerusalem Post newspaper also reported the moments of the two soldiers’ deaths.
It said the officers had completed military drills in the firing zone of the Nabi Musa base and were on patrol when they identified the suspicious figure.
